Cheap living and loving – living in an RV

Is the modern economy making you live on the cheap?

It certainly does in our house. Take heart…you may have to spend less on housing. How good can that be?

A great fun way to experience cheap living is to live in an RV. Yes… this lifestyle is cheaper than home… it’s much more flexible than home… and you get to choose your climate as an added bonus.

So the poor 2009 economy sends us lemons. Let’s make lemonade.

My wife and I have lived in an RV for 7 years, 5 to 22 months at a stretch. What’s Bad About Fishing in Montana in July? Then you saw Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, before winter in Palm Springs, Arizona? …wait…that’s what I thought…it’s a great way to live.

You can do that too.

It’s like you’re on permanent vacation and your motel room moves with you. You never empty, everything you need moves with you.

Most motor homes tow a car so you will have transportation when you arrive. If you like pickups, look no further than travel trailers. Or with smaller campers your “device” is your car.

What kind of rig is best? …it all depends on you. They all see the same scene and breathe the same air.

How cheap is it? It depends on how much travel you do. The more you move, the more fuel you will burn. If you don’t spend more than a week in one RV park, you’ll also pay higher rent. The daily rate could be $40 a night, but the monthly rate could be $500. So if you stay longer in one place, you will save on rent and fuel. It is up to you how much you spend.

There are a lot of things you might miss when you hit the road. Let’s list them… your beloved snow blower… shoveling leaves in the fall… uncluttering the garbage disposal… painting the house… I could go on but you get the idea. Maintaining a home isn’t cheap, it can be a pain.

You have some maintenance to live in an RV, just like a car. Change the oil, air in the tires, same basic car stuff. You have plumbing in your RV, but it’s pretty basic and easy to maintain.

Worry about what you do while you live in an RV? The better question is do I have enough time to do all of that. Mostly not. You’ll find the RV folk to be friendly and willing to help, and they’re all happy to have fun and live on the cheap.

Well, living in an RV is lemonade out of a lousy economy… that would be lemons. If there are parts of this beautiful country you haven’t seen yet, an RV is a perfect (sorry) way to find out what you’ve been missing. enjoy.
